Those Deserving of Admiration.

 Those Deserving of Admiration.

Reading about a woman who outranked every general in the Civil War, it seems she made it her calling to take care of the misery, the stupidity, and the necessities that came up in the true service for those men who fought, sickened, and died—or lived through those horrors. Her name was Mary Anne Bickerdyke. She thought that she was just going to deliver supplies to those men who were fighting in battles. Instead, she furnished cleanliness, food, shelter, and comfort to those who would otherwise have died in each camp. Sometimes our least expectations turn into something that only God can change to something that matters. But then, that was how it has always been when God puts forth His hand in the affairs of men and women.

It is not always an individual who makes a difference in lives, but for some of us, it is the single person’s example that change our viewpoints. Have you ever heard someone tell a story about something your parent or grandparent has done that mattered to that person? It may be something that your father taught some young man. Or it might have been the attitude that your mom helped some young woman deal with when life seemed all too much at a time. Or maybe it was just the cookies shared over the backyard fence with the kids next door. A child notices when an adult talks to them as if they matter. No one has to brag on a child to make a difference in attitude if an adult simply shows by word or deed that a child really does matter. Sometimes a word of admiration will make all the difference in how a person sees his or her own character. Let us keep looking for the best in those we see.

My friend Roger told me that his father-in-law has moved on from this world to the next. Know that Susan will miss her dad. Apparently, he was a very happy man—three good wives over a period of years. He must have been doing something right! Let’s pray for Roger and Susan’s safe return to Texas.

Trying to have a good attitude around here. Dr. Blackwell told me that preventing some of the pain will make a difference, so here’s to taking the pills she recommended. Guessing that Dr. Kern will need a box of galvanized baling wire to put things back together, but my daughter seems to think that some of the problems can be alleviated with exercises. After translating the MRI results into ChapGpt, the old woman only understands a few more words that describe strictures and narrowing of certain boney structures. Just need to work on having a sense of humor.

Cooked some chicken breasts, turnip, celery, and spices this evening. It smells so good. Just wish the number of turnips had been about four times as many! What is it about turnips that make them smell so very good? Oh! Please don’t tell me that you don’t like turnips!!! They are good raw or cooked! Bet the next order of groceries includes several turnips!!

We need rain around here. The grass is brown, naturally, but the ground itself is dry, dry, dry! Hoping that God blesses the land with some rain very soon. No, we don’t need the amounts seen in Washington state or Oregon, but even a few inches could certainly make a difference for the fields and crops. May God bless this land.

It’s hard to realize that we are just about into a new year. Somehow, and this happens every year, it does not really seem as if a new year is anywhere nearby. The trees have lost their leaves and the grasses have strown their seeds. Now if the Harvester ants can gather up the seeds, maybe we can grow some little horny toads around here. Wouldn’t that be wonderful! God makes things have their own cycles of life. Appreciating life includes loving God’s designs. May He show us His mighty ways every day!

Keep loving and learning more as the days go by. We are so very blessed.

Rest well, my friends. You are loved.

The Results. [MRI]

 The Results. [MRI]

Have found myself feeling pretty resigned to being a burden on my children for at least a couple of months. Will have to wait until Dr. Kern has time to work on repairing my back before we know when this will begin, but can just say that at least we now know what is wrong. No, not sure just how it all came about, but the left side is messed up except for the place the doctor repaired the first time. That part won’t need any further work done on it. Deep sigh.

Heard from Roger today while they are in Wisconsin. Cold and icy up there. Her dad lives up that way, don’t you see. Can’t imagine wanting to be there in this weather for any other reason. But then, some folks feel that way about being in Texas during tornado season. Let’s face it, the weather makes the attitudes.

United sent the sweetest lady to deliver some Rx today after lunch. She informed me that her husband delivers my mail on the days that Kevin is not running the route. Enjoyed visiting with her even for that short little spell. Funny how we meet folks that have other connections to us. Have no idea if any mail was delivered today, but don’t feel like wobbling out there to find out.

Had chicken egg rolls for din-upper today. But also had three cups of chicken bouillon. That stuff is better than coffee as far as how it treats my body. Warm and comforting and non-caffeine. Still, enjoy the taste of coffee first thing in the morning even if it has to be decaf. Dogs don’t care as long as they get fed first before Mom sits down to have her coffee.

The military kids across the street are still not back from Washington state. Hope all is well with them and that their flight can take off despite the weird weather. Know the cats will probably be ok, so promising myself not to worry about it. Still, if it is necessary, maybe I can get Albert to walk me over there to check on them in a day or two if the kids are not back. They expected to be gone four days. Today is the fourth one. Here’s hoping.

Woke up thinking it was Sunday. Doesn’t take much to mess up my internal calendar. At least Thompson got the right pill from his pill box even if the old woman took the one for Sunday. Rolling eyes here. Yes, the silly phone would be happy to tell me the day of the week if someone were smart enough to look at it. Oh well.

Have some celery that needs to be either cooked or otherwise prepared for meals. Thinking celery stuffed with pimento cheese would be nice if the celery is still crisp. If it is soggy, well. Hate to waste food, but soggy celery is pretty doggone useless. Not even soup is improved with soggy stuff.

The dogs have had quite a bit of ground turkey that they eat like champs! It does have a good taste to it. They clean their bowls up completely! It was easy to cook two chubs of that stuff and put it up in a closed bowl to portion out as needed. Even Thompson stands there waiting for it to be placed on the feeding stand. Yes! He likes it! Cheese is good, but this stuff is better, obviously!

Patty and the old woman were trying to find something funny to talk about this morning. Seems like we get a laugh out of some of the dang-est things. We just enjoy griping about the weather and when we have to turn on the heaters or turn on the ceiling fans! Never know which it will be! Life is never all that dull. And then, we know we can enjoy griping together at least once a day!

Filling up water bottles around here has kept me walking from one room to another to be sure each room has at least two bottles to empty during a day or night. Determined not to become dehydrated! Who knew that water drinking could be so very important!

Hoping to hear from Rylan and his family soon. Thought they were coming one day this week, but have not heard from them. Pictures are great, but little boy hugs are fantastic! God gives us the grands to help us remember the first ones we loved.

Rest well, my friends. You are loved.

Dictionary Time.

 Dictionary Time.

Reading a series of cozy mysteries lately and found myself disgusted because the “normal” dictionary attached to the Kindle did not include the word “lugubriously.” It means “exaggerated mournfulness.” We’re not talking about tears and weepy faces here. This is more like an attitude for appearances. Anyway, had to look it up and was glad that Jennifer had put my good dictionary in the bookcase in the living room where it could stand out and be seen. Saul Bellow has been—so far—the only author whose vocabulary kept my dictionary handy by necessity. Guess that says something about my choices in literature.

My neighbor Patty told me some things about Wikipedia that made me decide to NEVER support that source again. She said that the anti-Christ remarks were all it took to put her totally off! But then, reading this series about folks (especially ministers) of the Anglican persuasion have made me realize that if a person does not stand for something, they will just about stand for anything! Thinking that attitude got Israel in a bunch of trouble more times than one!

Stripped my bed and have the sheets on washing. The top bedspread is a heavy thing that picks up dog hair like a magnet, so that is next. Dread putting it in the washer, but have no desire to go to a laundromat. Both of the dog beds really should be washed, but that is not happening right now either. Stubborn ol’ woman!

Received an expected box from Amazon yesterday that the delivery person set right against the front storm door. That was fun! Anyway, got the new sweat pants and a top out and washed them last night. These all have pockets!! Why any garment can be made without a pocket is beyond me!!! Mother made all of my clothes when she was sewing, but she never included a pocket!! But then, patterns did not include pockets for little girls! Silly designers!

Saw a picture of Lowry Mayo with one of his adopted grandchildren at what looked to be a school cafeteria. Mentioned that it was hopeful that all the children were becoming educated now that they were state-side and in a stable environment. NOT that it is any of my business, but English language in reading, writing, and speech is so important. Oh, it would be lovely to know Hebrew or even Yiddish, but the language of the place we live is the most important. Lowry has the means to help these children become educated, so if he is helping them assimilate, that is the kindest thing he could do for them.

Just finished my cup of hot apple cider. Not sure it is better than an apple, but it is much simpler to consume. And it seems to help my digestive issues while taking this prednisone. Like Patty says quite often, “If it is not one thing, it’s another!” One thing for the arthritis and pain, and one thing to keep another system going!

Carol Thonton said that West Texas is clear today, and Sterling said it was lovely up around Gentry, Arkansas. Here it is cloudy and breezy. At least it is not flooding and pouring buckets from the heavens above!

Just read that Christmas brings in nearly $1 Trillion in revenue for retailers every year. Thinking about all that wrapping paper just about staggers my mind. Then there is the statement made by Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana that 287 people died of gunshots here in the U.S. this year. But(t) 2,187 died of constipation! So, you don’t want to be full of shtuff!

My friend near the Wichita Mountains in Oklahoma said that her brother Bruce had had a heart attack a day ago. Have not contacted her to see how he is yet because her phone number is not in my list. But have prayed that he, along with others recovering from heart problems (David Baxter included) will heal and get back on their feet quickly. God made our bodies to be amazingly versatile and healable, but we have to take care to treat them well. Let us pray for those whose health is in jeopardy for whatever reason. All the weird stuff that affects us in not necessarily our fault, but we have to try to remove the obviously bad things that hurt us. Let us be aware for ourselves and compassionate toward others.

Rest well, my friends. You are loved.

Just Thinking and Wondering.

 Just Thinking and Wondering.

Have spent an inordinate amount of time on FB today. Have not accomplished much either. Saw that President Trump has sent in the Warthogs to dump on Syria for their attack on our soldiers. LOVE those planes! But hate that this was necessary. Hope the soldiers’ families can have the comfort and peace that only God can provide. So very much is happening right now all over the world—and then we look at the Northwest and all the flooding. It just seems as if it is one thing right after another. The climate has become as warped as some of the ideas men have come up with about how to actually create more power—the electrical kind and the political kind.

Neighbor Max brought the dog food in off the bench on the front porch and placed the bag in the big, black trash container (used only for dog food). So glad to have that done already. He and Laisha will be flying out to Tacoma sometime soon to see how things are at the base where they will be stationed. Will hope that they find a happy place for them to live. Also, hope that Laisha will find work as quickly as possible. She does not like to be “still” and not have a job.

Shona has had her hands full with trying to get things squared away with her mom, and then today when they were transferring her from her bed to her chair, she passed out and was taken to the hospital. Think she will be ok, but know it upset Shona to not be able to be there for her mom. Know how she feels. Moms are pretty important in the larger scheme of things.

Touching base with Judie Brunson and Patty today meant a couple of texts and one phone call, but then things got busy. Talked with Cousin Wham for a bit and she explained why her wrists were both immobile. The surgeons had to remove a bone in each wrist to straighten them out from the stupid arthritis. Can’t imagine how she worked around all that, but she had a great attitude. We discussed how much different knee surgery is as compared to hip replacement. She has two new knees and two new hips. Shaking my head here. But then she had to tell me about her new car with all the bells and whistles. It’s a hybrid that does not have to be plugged in—ever. Sounds great.

The entire neighborhood must have had deliveries today by FedEx and the postal service. The postman had me sign for a big bag of meds from Optum, and the FedEx young man handled the dogfood and another box to place on my bench on the front porch. Then, later this evening, after the trash truck came and dumped out everything, my young neighbor brought my trash bin back into my yard. AJ is the sweetest young kid, but he is going to be one VERY tall man someday. He is not even a teenager yet and is probably taller than this old woman!!

Had a cup of real coffee today and am wondering if sleep will happen tonight. Almost worth it just to enjoy the coffee. Had intended to find a recipe for egg noodles and try to make some like Mother used to make. Have long since forgotten how she made hers, but remember that they had to sit out on the table on her pie board to “dry” before she cooked them. Maybe a recipe will pop up online tomorrow.

Max said that Christmas Eve and the day after Christmas were going to become federal holidays. That will be different. Wondering how Walmart will handle not having their stores packed with returns on the 26th every year!! Can you tell that Walmart is not my favorite store?

Sometimes we all need to remember that this time of the year is a bit harder on some folks than any other time. Memories, both hard and good, can make life a bit more lonesome and harder to appreciate. And then there are those who can’t even afford to eat, put on clean underwear or socks, nor call anywhere home. Let us pray and DO whatever is within our means to help others. Our prayers make a difference in the lives of others—especially for little ones like the granddaughter of Diann Dennis. Little Raye may lose an eye if the cancer cannot be stopped. Let us hold her and her family in our hearts.

While other places are flooding, we could use some rain, but let God be our guide and help with what the land will need for the growth of pastures and crops this next year. Rejoice that God loves us.

Rest well, my friends. You are loved.
