Fruits.
Of all the things which appeal to us for our eating
pleasure, it seems the best ones are fruits. They are sweet or tangy or something
appealing. We learn to eat different things as children, but not everything
appeals to us naturally. Applesauce is one of the first fruits to give a little
one along with bananas or something not too strong tasting. We develop tastes
for different things as we grow up. In Texas, it seems most children learn to
love barbeque at a young age. And not yet have we ever heard of a child or
other critter turn down bacon! Blueberries, strawberries, grapes, and other small
pieces of fruit have to be given in bits so a child does not choke on it.
Anything can be consumed to excess or in too large of a serving. Even a large
piece of bacon could choke a child. We just have to use some measure of care
about what we give a child.
Did you ever think that sometimes we bite off more than we
can chew in life? Thinking about the folks who have won lotteries and what
sometimes happens in those situations. With money, a good advisor helps a
person not overstep boundaries of common sense, but even then, a person can
lose perspective quickly. Expecting someone else to like what we think we want
can be just as backwards as anything. It might be rather hard to try to do
things for others that would please them just because something would please
us. We expect others to have the same desires or expectations. One man said
that he would give up all his riches to be loved for himself. How many
marriages have failed despite riches. We think if we have enough money, things
should be perfect. Love should be there. But sometimes—even often—nothing could
be further from the truth.
Have you ever admired someone for their character traits
more than for their reputation or their standing in the community? How often do
you meet up with someone who is truly honest? Have you met a generous person
who is not giving things away just to be seen? Sometimes the kindest people are
the ones who are the quietest about the way they live their lives. They are not
quick to be judgmental. They listen; they are helpful without being showy. They
show their love for God through their kindnesses to others.
Thinking about those fruits again. God says He loves a
cheerful giver. Think of all the fruits that He has given us—and we are not
talking here about peaches and pears. We are talking about doing the will of
God—from the heart. “Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same
shall he receive of the Lord.” (Eph. 6:8)
Leave behind those unfair treatments you feel you have
endured and look forward to doing what is right in the eyes of God. Your fruit,
your bacon, should be a savor to mankind and to God.
Rest well, my friends. You are loved.
