Fried Squash!
Umm. Next to fresh cucumbers right out of the garden in one
hand and a fresh tomato in the other hand, not much out there is as good as
fried squash with a few onions fried up with the slices. Now, that is just one
old woman’s opinion, but such is how it is around here with opinions. The dogs
hardly ever disagree with me about such things. They know who fills up the feed
bowls and the water container.
Took Patty’s little bushy Roxie to the vet’s office this
morning. She did not want to wait any longer about having her seen, so she had
to pay $200 right off the get-go for an “emergency” visit. Only two women in
there other than the lady vet, so not sure just how busy they were, but
apparently they need some more helpers. Just my guess. Anyway, having critters
means taking care of them when they change their habits suddenly. Not sure just
why this little dog was sitting down strangely. Thought maybe she was full of
you know what, but that did not seem to be the problem. And they have to “sign”
their territory every time they go out. Kinda hoping it is not a urinary tract
infection or something of that nature. Wish critters could tell us where it
hurts.
Have a plate of sliced cucumbers, some slices of red bell
pepper, and a splot of spinach-artichoke spread. Love it when the cucumbers are
crispy. Using the pepper slices to load the cucumbers works well, too. Think my
mom would have liked this stuff. She loved fresh veggies, too. Just wish it were
possible to grow things more easily around here. Between the heat and the dry
weather, it is nearly impossible. But that is the story all over the country
right now. Well, that is about to change somewhat this week as the temperatures
go down. Sterling said it is supposed to get in the 20s up there in Northwest
Arkansas. Glad he is up there and not me. Here it is the wind that makes the
difference in whether we freeze or fry!
My computer was offline this morning. Seems the new router
had gone back to factory settings for some reason. Joy to the world. One of the
techs from Santa Rosa/Pinnacle was able to reset it from the office. Felt
almost cut off from the world without my computer! Doesn’t take long to spoil
an old woman, huh.
Saw the latest forecast for Florida. They just can’t seem
to catch a break! If alligators and big snakes were not enough, let’s just
flood everything or blow it away again! FEMA can’t get caught up until they are
going to have to do it all over again. Have a feeling the insurance companies
will leave Florida high and dry—or wet and flooded. Not enough trailers or
government tents to even begin to house the folks without insurance, and the
ones insured are not all that much better off.
Walked around pulling up khaki weed, but have SO much more
to do. Have a bunch of weeds that annoy me as well, but not sure that much
energy exists around here. The dogs and the hens are not much help, ya see. And
the dadgummed raccoon is just a mess! Put the trap on the deck and scooched it
between two things to keep it from turning around. Patty reminded me that they
are just like little kids with those handy little fingers. Sure enough. He or
she got the bait from the top side. Argh! Sterling suggested peanut butter, but
haven’t decided how to make it stay inside the area where it would spring the
trap. Smarter animal than the old woman. Sigh
Have to go see Dr. Kelly about my eyes in the morning.
Think we might as well do away with the tri-focals and just have long distance
and up close. Can’t get the bottom part to focus. Maybe he will know what to do
with my inability to see well. Distances have never been a problem, and now the
distance to the computer is not a problem. My arms are long enough that my
reading is easier without that bottom section. We will see—maybe.
It seems to me that this week is just flying by. It has
also been quite warm. That will change, too. Not looking forward to really cold
weather, but it does not bother me if it is just cooler. The wind keeps blowing
to move everything around, so we can expect the temperatures to flow from warm
to cool to plum cold pretty soon. This is Texas. Nothing is certain about our
weather except maybe the uncertainty.
Have not heard from Patty this afternoon, so maybe Roxie
will be staying at the vet’s overnight. Glad Patty has enough money to pay for
this kind of thing. Boarding a dog is expensive, but having to be treated by a
vet is exorbitant. Kinda like people and doctors.
Tired this afternoon. The dogs have been waking me up at
night and barking about something. May have some strange things going on in the
neighborhood, but as long as they are on the other side of the fence, will just
keep myself over here and quiet. Like to have peace and quiet—for the entire
neighborhood!
Let us pray for peace. So much is going on right now that
we all have a tendency to feel uncertain. No one in our society has answers to
all—or any—of the problems. Well, some may SAY that they have answers, but that
is like what comes out of the backside of a bull. Yep, and it stinks.
Rest well, my friends. You are loved.
