Moody Monday.
After all the rain stops, you can just bet your bottom
dollar that the heat will be with us with a vengeance. Really not looking
forward to that stuff, but maybe the grass will stay cut down for more than two
days before it outgrows the critters running through it. Could easily hide a
hen out there right now. It has simply been too wet to cut anything down and
keep it that way. Oh well. At least it is pretty and green. And, then too, the
lake down under the hill is almost full! Amazing to see Lake Wichita with that
much water in it and overflowing the spillway!
Another freaking snake got in the hen house this morning,
but it was gone by the time the old woman got out there. The hens were having
themselves a hissy fit and refused to get in the nests. Some eggs were broken,
but at least the hens eventually went back to the nests. Still have one
stinking broody hen. And boy does she ever squawk when picked up and taken to
the breakup cage! You’d easily believe she was being tortured to hear her
carrying on in her highest scream! Haven’t decided what to name her, but if she
keeps this up, she is not just going to be called a squawky hen!
Recently bought a spaghetti squash and roasted it today to
make with meatballs and Italian stewed tomatoes. Pretty tasty, but definitely
not like the kind Mom made. But then, this kind has no gluten or much in the
way of carbs. The strings of the spaghetti squash are almost crunchy if it is
not cooked too long. Enjoyed it to a certain extent, but would have liked it
better with some fresh baked and buttered bread. Sigh. So much for trying to
think healthy thoughts and only eat fresh veggies!
The cottontail rabbits across the street are about to drive
my dogs wild. They get out in front of the house and thumb their noses at the
dogs and then play around as if nothing can possibly bother them. Patty,
however, found a dead cottontail in her dog yard. A friend of hers was happy to
come haul what was left of it out of the yard. We think maybe an owl might have
dropped it out there, but that does not explain why it was left there. The
rabbit, however, was bigger than Roxy. Patty is hoping that any rabbit consumed
will be removed in the normal way of digestive situations. Bleah. Just glad
that Roxy was not able to chase it around the outside yard where something
could just as easily pick her off the ground and take off with her! Small dogs
have a large problem that way.
Not sure if it is the humidity causing the headaches or
what, but lately it doesn’t take much to cause me to sit still rather than keep
going like the energizer bunny. Being able to sleep when one gets to be too
much helps, but then the sleep cycle falls off the tracks. That does not help
much. Oh well. They say that strange things begin to happen as one ages. If
allergies are strange, then those things have been happening long before age
was ever a consideration!
Looking forward to seeing Jacqui and Sterling this Friday. Will
try to send a few dozen eggs down to the place they are staying with his oldest
daughter. He does say, however, that folks up his way are keeping them pretty
well supplied with eggs. Guess it is that time of year for everyone’s hens. It has
made me wonder how the big chicken places manage to have so many thousands of
baby chicks hatched out at the same time. Someone must have roosters and hens
running around!
Let us appreciate the weather and the rain no matter what.
Some have to deal with the flooding right now, but at least the water will
eventually run off and dry land appear—well, unless it happens to be an island
near Panama. Wow! God separated the land and the water, but we still manage to
get close to the edges and then complain about flooding. Don’t you know that He
shakes His head when we complain! Let’s try to be kind in thoughts and actions.
Rest well, my friends. You are loved.
