Memorial Day in 2024.
Unless we know some history, we have no way to remember
those who have been lost in military service while protecting our country. A friend
named Harry English served off the coast of Alaska years ago while he was in
the military. Seems the U.S. was testing some bombs out that way. Harry died
years later from cancer. It could be argued that while in the military he
smoked, and that could have been the cause of his cancer. Or maybe it was
working in a dark room developing film that caused his cancer. The military
marker at the foot of his grave doesn’t tell anyone about the man or his story
in our national history. And truly, maybe his story doesn’t need any
explanation. At least we know he was our friend, and we know where he and his
wife were laid to rest. So many of those who served had little to none of the
facts about them given in that little plot of ground somewhere in Europe or in some
country. Many men and women were lost at sea or otherwise were not known to
return to our nation. When it comes right down to it, not many of us are able
to remember someone who we never knew. But that does not negate their service
or their sacrifice. Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Christ showed us the way. He laid down His life so that we might live in His
kingdom. Even if we don’t know the history of our nation and its battles, we
can know the most important story—that of God’s will being done through His
son, Jesus Christ.
May you have
peace because you know, you are loved.
