All Plugged In!

When you finally decide that some vacuuming needs to be done, it might be a good idea to be sure that the on/off switch is in the right position to keep from having a warm water hemorrhage! Had my little dust buster thing out because the big vacuum requires the desk to be moved to get under there, and guess who did not feel like moving furniture today. So, plugged in the little critter and it nearly got thrown across the room! Oh well. Did eventually get the living room vacuumed. Not much else got done today. Lazy ol' woman!

Just threw out what was left of a loaf of gluten free cardboard! The hens attacked it for what that's worth. Poor critters are definitely getting cheated with that one. Did not realize gluten free meant texture free and taste free. No wonder my granddaughter could not stand the stuff. The hens may hide their eggs really well tomorrow just to spite me!

Connie called today and said she needed me to tell her about the hens or something that made me smile. She is not happy with all their snow in Maryland. Told her that we are blessed to still be on the ground down here after that bodacious wind the other day. It tore down my posted sign on the back forty, so maybe tomorrow will see another one wired to the fence. May put it on this side of the yard since only Jerry climbs my fences on the back side. Not much good signs do with him around!

Had been wanting stewed tomatoes, so that is what supper was tonight. Thought there were absolutely no crackers in the house, but a tiny little "sample" package of Cheezits were on the kitchen counter. Might should straighten up things on that counter more often, huh. May have to put crackers on my next order for groceries. Not that groceries are really needed right now. The green stuff runs out the fastest, but have plenty of cheese. Have plenty of eggs, for that matter. Even boiled a bunch this morning and made salmon salad with them. Have discovered that two meals a day works out pretty well if coffee is left off of the menu. Coffee--the real stuff--makes my stomach think it needs something in it. So, going a couple of hours before "breakfast" is a good idea for me. As long as a bad case of the "nibbles" does not occur, that will work out well. Seems that other than boredom, nibbling is the worst part of this staying away from anyone. sigh

Had to look up how to make my cursor more noticeable. Years ago that would have been easy and just something that would be done automatically if needed. Now that my eyes can't see as well, the cursor needs to be larger. Start--settings--Ease of Access--Cursor/Pointer. Now it is easy to see.

Sharon Dickerson posted some suggestions for those who might have depression. They include a hot bath or shower, good rollicking music--Hey Google, play 60s music!--a cup of something hot and flavorful---or cold and the same. Doing at least ONE little job that makes you feel that you have accomplished something (vacuuming under the desk!) and some kind of exercise. Can't remember all the separate parts to the suggestions, but they sounded reasonable. It is so easy to just hibernate and think thoughts that might not be good for you. For instance, this afternoon something reminded me of the Star of David necklace on leather that a friend brought back from Israel and gave to Hanan. His history teacher at the time made him take it off and told him that he did not deserve to wear it. YEARS later he told me about this. Which is probably a good thing since that teacher might have been scalped. Don't care how Jewish he was or wasn't, that teacher had no right to make a child embarrassed and humiliated in front of his peers. Not to mention that it was not any business of his what our child wore! See, thinking about things like that can just get one's blood pressure up. But crap like that is what makes people resent other religions so easily. Now we have people resenting Christians again in some places. Shaking my head and wondering when this will all just explode into a strange world--or stranger world.

You have probably noticed that the Jerusalem Post is one of the things read here every day. The Jewish people have some problems accepting Jews from other nations--well, hello! Not all Jewish people come from European backgrounds. Same with Christians, for that matter. Think there are probably more Christians in Louisiana than in all of Europe right now. So many countries do not have our background at all. Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and many of the Nordic countries are definitely not Christian. They are not even religious. In Israel, the idea of religion and the national identity are not exactly one and the same. The Ten Commandments work out to be suggestions there just about the same as they do here with most folks, but the really hardcore Jewish scholars and their descendants feel about religion kinda like the Southern Baptist used to: SUNDAY worship for Christians like the seventh day--Saturday for the Jews. And guess who gets antagonized the most. Kinda sad. This pandemic has caused all kinds of problems for the Jews who believe that they should gather for worship, just like some congregations do here in the U.S. Different religions, same God. We won't go into the Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob for the same reason that we won't go into Baptism by submerging or sprinkling. No doubt some folks would be offended by Jesus Christ's return. So there's that.

From the sounds of it, someone is over close to the State Hospital grounds in that boggy creek bed off of Rathgeber Road. Mudding has to be one of the most asinine "hobbies" one could possibly have. The noise must be what they enjoy the most. Certainly can't be good for an engine or any other part of a truck. Oh well. To each his own. Just wish they would get quiet.

It seems the sun is coming up earlier every day now. See me smile. The hens appreciate getting out there to do their thing. You should see them run out the door of the middle coop. The hens in the metal building don't have as much light, so they don't go in there until the big door is open. Still, they make plenty of noises about wanting out before the door is opened. Gripey critters to match the gripey ol' woman.

The dogs have been having a nibble fest today, so dread the results tonight---don't light a match situation, ya know. But they need something to keep them busy, too. They would normally get more exercise if they could just get me out of the house and doing something. Maybe it will warm up tomorrow. It is supposed to freeze tonight, but get warmer this week--until NEXT Saturday when it is supposed to get down to 21 degrees! ARGH!!! About the time it might look decent, the crud starts again. Winter. Texas. February begins tomorrow.

Hope each of you has something good to think about and something fun to do tomorrow. You are loved.

Energy?

Not sure where my energy went, but it does not seem to be inside with any attitude. So far today, my accomplishments have been limited to cleaning the water bowls for the hens and discovering their new hiding place for their eggs. Thought there was some reason the hens were not laying the normal number of eggs. Well, surprise, surprise, surprise! They decided to lay in the old coop box where they were raised until they were big enough to be around the other hens. And even the older hens decided to lay their eggs in the same spot. So fifteen eggs were brought into the house and washed because one egg had been cracked and messed them up. After washing the eggs, a call to Cari Guidry meant that the eggs had a new home. Don't like keeping eggs in the fridge, so had to tell Cari to keep them in her fridge. My eggs are never washed unless they have mud or poo on them. Those eggs that are washed are either boiled or otherwise used quickly. A hen leaves what is called a "bloom" on her egg that seals it. Unless it is hot outside, those eggs will keep without refrigeration for two weeks. Just in case you might ever wonder.

The red-headed tanager is the bird of the day on my calendar.  It is not likely that we would see one in this part of the country--maybe in the Pinewoods of East Texas. We have more mesquite and jack oak in this part of the world. Used to be amazed at the birds we saw in Montague County when we went to the family farm in Bonita. They had the usual plus plenty of colored birds--even a painted bunting once. Ah, beautiful hills and lots of good growing trees! The Dickerson land had springs on it and walnut, pear, and persimmon trees. And the ground seemed to grow just anything planted. Garland always said that this land up here was better for growing things, but it is so difficult to keep things watered. Oh well. Will never have a reason to return to the land down there again.

My brother Sterling called today and said he and Jacqui would be here this weekend maybe so. He asked me about some cousins that used to live here in WF when we were young. It was Bill and Mary Sheets and their two kids: Sharon and Kent. In my memory it was Sharon and Keith, but what do memories say after this many years? Mary was my granddad's sister--one of three. She and both of her sisters died of ovarian cancer just like Grandmother Kennedy--granddad's mother. That is the sort of thing that makes a person sit up and take notice of genetic tendencies. My mom had ovarian tumors, too. Anyway, have not seen or heard from any of that side of the family since the late 60s. Guess we are not exactly a close family.

The weather today has not exactly been inviting or even semi-pleasant. Sterling said that the cold and the wind were doing the same thing in Arkansas. Spring will probably be stormy this year, but when was that ever a surprise?

This morning about 7 a.m. Jerry set off some fireworks. It made me growl since it was not really time to crawl out of bed that red-hot minute. Even the dogs were not impressed. Not sure what is going on with him, but it would be kinda nice if he could go somewhere else to make his noises. And take his noisy friends with him! Gripey old woman here.

Have been reading the sequel to Murphy's Luck. It is a cute book and pretty thought provoking. It really is true that some of us just float along through life as if everything is going to be either good or bad--not our responsibility in either case. Taking time to think about things just means that we can more easily accept that what happens is not just a fluke or happenchance. Lewis used to think things through like his daddy before him. It always amazed me that he seemed to know what would happen next in any situation and prepared for it. Not me! Just walk into things like a blind bat without radar! Such is life.

Have been sneezing today as if something is in the air. The pollen people seem to think that the pollen count is low, so that is probably not it. Maybe a hot mustard bath tonight might make me less sneezy. Could just be the beginning of an old-fashioned cold. Those still happen, right?

It is still too sad to look on FB much lately. Even my phone has stuff on it about folks dying of Covid. God just has to help us do the best we can about staying away from others. Thought about that when Sterling said they were coming by to see me, but how do you tell someone to stay away when they live two states away! Guess a mask might help, but doubt it. May try anyway. Jacqui has had cancer and does not need anything else. But she and Sterling have both had the first shot for this mess. Read one person's account of taking the second shot. Sounded painful and scary with fever and fatigue. Think this old woman will just stay home with the dogs.

Going to have to start writing down what food disappears around here. Someone is eating too often. Yeah, me. Nikki Smith warned me that one of the meds taken around here will cause weight gain. Isn't THAT just wonderful--not. Hoping that warmer weather will encourage more movement and a cleaning spree inside. Guess that might be a good thing to do tomorrow since Sterling and Jacqui will be here Sunday. Could actually dust the furniture! Not much telling what will turn up underneath some of the things lying around the TV table. Need to keep the next Amazon box to put things for the dogs inside. And some books need to be taken to the bookcase in the back bathroom. Yes, you read it right--a book case in the little bathroom. It did not start out to be a bathroom, but it is now. Worked out well, but the office got moved to where the original bathroom began. Remodeling is such fun!

Don't really know anything worth sharing. Feel sore and grumpier than usual, so there's that. But who needs to share the grumpies? Oh, worked on the door to the chicken coop with my little drill and some screws. Because the air tool has to be connected with a little metal thing. May ask Sterling to apply it to the hose and the staple gun for me. But he warned me that his hands hurt, too. See, getting old is definitely not for sissies! Grumpy ones or otherwise.

May you all find something to enjoy and rest well. You are loved.

Furr's Tray.

Years ago we had a nice cafeteria here in Wichita Falls called Furr's. One of the women who worked there took home a salmon pink tray and a nice long pan that was appropriate for slices of stuff that they put out on the serving line. We ended up cleaning up the mess that that woman and her family left behind in a rental house because it belonged to an older neighbor who needed some help getting it cleaned out. All that to explain that the pink tray is on my desk under the diffuser that Jennifer sent to me. Oh, and the pan is in the oven covered with apples baking. The diffuser has put a nice mist in the air here in the living room with something called On Guard. The pan of apples baking have made the entire house smell like cinnamon and apple! Umm.

The old woman's body is sore again today. Have NOT done anything to cause that, so there is no excuse except maybe age and the weather. It is supposed to be fairly decent for a few days, so whatever it is doing has got to just be primed for achy old folks. sigh We had some nice sunshine today, and the dogs lay on the sofa and absorbed its rays while the old woman sat in the chair next to the windows to enjoy the sunshine. The hens didn't seem to be concerned about weather at all. They have eating on the brain, and that's about all most of the time. My favorite, Isa, comes out to talk to me whenever she sees me, but even she is more oriented to eating than anything else. At least they are producing the eggs.

Connie sent me a text message this morning saying that the doctors are going to send Rebekah to another hospital just down the road from where she is. Hoping that Connie is taking good care of herself. For sure no one is around to help her except God. Please pray for them.

The house has been kind of chilly today despite the stove. Not sure why since the wind was not bad or anything. Oh well. When August gets here, then listen to the tune of gripey ol' hot woman!

Just finished counting the hens in the coops: 9 of the pullets, 8 Black-laced Wyandottes, and 8--make that 9--of the older hens. Thought one was missing, but Edith had managed to get to the shelf above the boards placed down at my height. Put the boards down there to keep them from going up on the top shelf, but she found a spot just a little higher than my ideal placement. Such is the way of hens.

Lance sent me a picture of a cat that was labeled thus: When you meow at your owner for food, but instead he meows back at you with 13 grammatical errors. The expression on that cat's face!

The bird for the day on my new calendar is of a Knysna Turaco. Beautiful bird, but not likely to find that critter in this part of the world. Lewis used to try to get my goat by calling all birds sparrows. Not this one! Can't even pronounce it.

The Knysna turaco, or, in South Africa, Knysna loerie, is a large turaco, one of a group of African musophagidae birds. It is a resident breeder in the mature evergreen forests of southern and eastern South Africa, and Swaziland. It was formerly sometimes considered to be a subspecies of the green turaco of West Africa. The Livingstone's and Schalow's turacos were once considered subspecies.

Lewis would have been seventy-seven yesterday. Miss him. He would have enjoyed sitting on the deck and watching these hens dig holes.

One of Jerry's idiot friends has his truck and trailer parked out in the middle of the street. My dogs are NOT happy about it, especially because the guy has a dog tied to his trailer. Oh well. He won't be there all night.

The other idiot in the neighborhood is gunning his truck as if it has problems. It really DOES have a problem: the one behind the wheel! ARGH! Noises like that are so unnecessary.

Have another book started. Have not finished the one about the Maccabees yet. It takes a certain kind of attitude to finish that kind, and maybe that will happen later when knowing how they all died won't bother me as much. Right now this one is about a guy who could not attend public school and never watched TV or saw a movie. Not exactly like the Amish, but definitely not open to public interactions. It seems like it will be a very good book.

Ah, a good soak and now ready to go back to my book. Nothing like hot water and Epsom salts to relax a body. And the smell of baked apples to tempt one to snack before bedtime! Oh well.

May you all take good care of yourselves and enjoy life as much as possible. You know that God gave us the best of everything, so you can be grateful as well. You are loved.

Old Sorehead!

When we were kids, if someone was grumpy, especially around kids, that person would be called a sorehead. Well, now and then there is a sorehead who makes her appearance around this house. But it is not just the head that is sore! Bending over at the waist and then kneeling on the ground to get those stakes pounded down around the wire just added to the soreness. So today, a sorehead lives here. Oh well. Maybe tomorrow will be a nice warm day--or at least a sunny one. Think it is supposed to freeze tonight and tomorrow night. Ah, the joys of being a human thermometer and barometer!

Have talked to Connie today, but so far the hospital has not actually done anything other than a CAT scan on Rebekah. Think they are just getting her insurance money and that is all. Kinda disturbing. Still appreciate your prayers for both of them. It snowed up there, but Connie is not driving, but she has to depend on a Uber to go anywhere. Just as well. She does not need to drive in a strange town.

Thompson is doing his talking to me stuff right now. Can't imagine how anyone could spoil a dog to this extent! He thinks that his language should be easy to understand from just his expressions! Right.

One of the girls who grew up when my kids were attending church posted on FB today that her brand new grandson made his entrance into the world today--emergency C section, but both are doing ok. Sometimes little ones just don't want to wait. So happy that they are ok. Becoming a grandparent for the first time is neat, but only after we are sure the kids are ok!

Had trouble getting to sleep last night, so around eleven a sleeping pill took care of that situation. Woke up before five, but fell back to sleep, so the hens were hitting the doors when the old woman finally got out there a little before eight. Poor critters!

Sylvia just had to move me. She scratched the floor and gruffed at me until my chair was out of her way. Somehow her favorite squeaky toy got under the desk. Oh my!

Had to get up just now and go fill up the jar that Roger Thonton gave me. It now has about 20 "bones" in it. They are SO much easier to give to the dogs than those tiny bones.

Worked in the hen house a bit today. The girls were not laying in the shelf inside to the right of the door, so decided to make it easier to clean up and removed the laying boxes to UNDER the shelf. We will see what happens. Hens are so different about how they adjust to things being moved around. It seems to me that they look for reasons to have something moved. Sitting on top of the box and pooping on the shelf was not one of the things appreciated by the poop cleaner upper! Now they will probably ignore the laying nest totally. But there are other boxes, so who knows where the eggs will end up.

God gives us only so many years and so much understanding about life in general, but some days it seems that it is easier to see things from a distance than from up close. Looking back reminds me of how very blessed we were. Looking forward makes me wonder how my grands will do when they have to adjust to life. But my job now is to pray for them now and ask Him to bless them in whatever way is best for them. We can't adjust their beliefs or even their lifestyles, so our only real recourse is to love them now and cover them in our prayers. And we can do the same for the parents. May God let them see how they are so very blessed. Let them appreciate those blessings as well. Let us cover our children and their children with our prayers. God knows His plan for their lives.

Got a message today from Sue Dickerson about the shot they want everyone to take. It doesn't prevent us from getting anything. It just produces antibodies or something. Think maybe sitting here on this old hill will be my number one tactic for staying well. Not that Jennifer thinks her mom does a very good job of staying at home! [Really do.]

Sharon Dickerson has a niece named Kimberly Alvarado who is going to let MD Anderson doctors remove all her water works, the end of the digestive system, and excess baby buggy bumpers from her lower body. Please remember her in your prayers. Sounds pretty horrific, but then cancer does it just as bad. Horrible disease!

Don't know anything funny or especially interesting to tell you tonight, so just know that you have plenty of time to come up with something funny to tell the rest of us. You are welcome to ask BillyeRuth if her hens have started roosting on the roof yet, or if Robin Christian has conquered the weather in Illinois. You ask; they have to tell you!

Rest well, my friends. You are loved.

Sunshine and Green Grass!

Oh joy! The sun is shining! Walked out and pulled up an old screen door that was on the old cellar door so the dogs could have a "salad" of grass. Not sure if the hens have tried any yet, but both dogs ate a bate. And tiny little blades of grass are coming up in the back yard. Yay!

Went over to the Smith's farm this morning to pick up some lettuce leaves, squishy tomatoes, a yucky cantaloupe, and assorted stuff the hens would eat. They ate the tomatoes first. Think they even had a squabble over those! Then they ate the cantaloupe--or most of it. Anyway, they are happy campers. Did not even see Nikki, Stephen, the boys or Cindy Jones, but SO appreciate the fact that they go get this mess for our critters. Some of it is good enough for people, too.

Went out and put down 50 stakes around the fence. Might could have used a few more stakes, but what stakes were needed most got pounded into the ground. Hoping the fence is a bit more secure now. The only hard part was getting up and down when moving from one section to the other. Got kinda muddy, but both the pants and the body will wash.

Got a call from Connie earlier. She was crying. She and Rebekah had gone to the bank and then to the hospital. Rebekah is so very depressed and hardly wants to live. All Connie can do is listen, try to suggest things, and pray. Please pray for both of them. Rebekah has no idea what is wrong with her, but thinks she has something that is causing her to be sick constantly. She is pretty paranoid as well. Connie is supposed to return on February 7, so we can hope that by then the doctors will either listen to Rebekah or admit her to a psychiatric hospital. Either way, right now prayer is about the only hope for the situation. Really feel for Connie. Know how hopeless it is to try to help someone who can't seem to think straight.

Have six dozen eggs sitting out on the bench ready for Dr. Blackwell's nurse Jennifer to pick them up. Going to have to see if Cari Guidry's phone number is in any of my address books. Have tried to contact her, but she does not necessarily answer messages. Think about six hens could easily go to her house if she wants them. But we will see if she ever got her chicken coop made first.

The back yard is so muddy and wet. Less than 1/2 inch of rain, but it must have really soaked into the ground. It is supposed to be cold at night for a few nights while the sun is to shine in the daytime. Then rain again on Saturday. Oh well. Jennifer asked me if we got hail last night. If we did, the old woman slept through it. Actually a good night's sleep!

Put some beet seeds out a bit ago. It makes me smile to think that they may actually come up where they were sown. The ground there has been planted in iris, but the place is perfect for beets as well. We will see. Still have not put out the poppy seeds, but maybe tomorrow. Only so much energy per day, ya know. And tomorrow have to go by the pharmacy to pick up the Gabapentin to keep me from being so danged sore. It seems to work pretty well. But think that being able to use the water hose instead of hauling water from the kitchen sink will help just as much as the drug. Just you wait and see if we don't get a water line dug and laid to the hen house this spring!

Got some laundry done already this morning and the living room floor dust mopped. Took two pair of pants and two long-sleeved blouses from the washer in knots! How that happens is beyond me! Had to untangle them just to put them in the dryer. Oh well. At least the rest of the laundry was not tied in knots--towels, socks, and undies. They are already folded and put away, too.

Started reading a book about the Maccabees. This is the second book. Know the outcome, but it is still interesting reading. It is something to know that you are outnumbered, out gunned, and otherwise not likely to live through the situation, but it reminds me of the men at the Alamo--they died for what they believed in. With the Maccabees, they were going to be killed off in ones, twos, or dozens, but the outcome would never be changed except that they could fight back as a group. It is not much different really than the American Revolution. Standing up for our beliefs will still get a person killed, but lying down and not saying a word is hardly living. The powers that fought the Maccabees wanted to take away their faith, their ability to honor God, and to take everything they could grow or make. That is really not living. That is slavery and dishonor--humiliation and degradation. The sabbath hasn't changed; God hasn't changed. Man just does not want to accept God's laws or even how Christ showed men to love one another. Sad.

Ok, thinking about mindfulness: Whose voice do you hear in your head? Have you even listened to that voice? Some say that mindfulness is being AWARE of the moment and how it affects you. It is not our job to judge what is around us, but simply know that things are there, that we can choose to be in contact with those things with our senses. This morning, while the old woman was still getting dressed, a wren carried on a long song of happiness to greet the day. The joy made me aware of how the happiness affected me in that moment. It made me smile and realize that despite not seeing the bird, it had made me happy with its chorus to the day. Later the sun shone into the living room to warm up a lazy dog. She yawned and made a silly noise. It made me happy to hear her and see the comfort she gained from that sunshine. The bird's singing, the dog's yawn, the light's warmth--these are just part of the awareness that goes on in our minds. But we still need to listen for our own voice--how we respond to these stimuli also includes our inner voice. Sometimes these are the times that we can tell God how much we appreciate things. Sometimes it is enough to know that all the messages our body receives are being re-percolated through our attitude. We can't always choose the attitude because pain is pretty much with us in one form or another for all of our lives. But if we listen to that voice in our heads, to the spirit that we have been given by the Creator, we can adjust our feelings, our perceptions, more easily. When my husband's voice was with me so much after he died, it was hard to listen to what mattered to me. It took a bit to begin to adjust to just listening to those little sounds of my voice--the one that truly belonged to me. Now it is my voice in my head. And although the children and friends matter to me so very much, it is obvious that each minute is mine first. How that minute is used is my choice. Yep, mindfulness is listening to one's voice and knowing that neither the wind outside, the noises from around one, or the distractions of the world matter as much as being sensitive to one's own needs for a sound spirit.

Have just now had a boiled egg and hamburger for din-upper. Going to go read my book and enjoy the rest of this day. May you all stay healthy and happy. You are loved.

Misting Rain.

Yup, it's wet outside and muddy to boot. The dead grass is not too good to use for cleaning my shoes, so have to scrape them each time on a post lying down before the walkway. A limb right above that post is my handhold, so eventually it will get worn smooth by my touch--my guess. Still, can't gripe about the weather. It is not cold, at least. It may freeze at night for the next several days, but it is STILL January--in Texas. Gotta just grit your teeth and let it be what it is going to be.

Tomorrow will be time to put out more clean water and rake out the coops again. It's always something that needs to be done, but at least it is never boring. Got a green egg today, so that made me smile real big! That means that either Harriet or Edith is laying again. Probably Edith. She had been molting and losing feathers all over the place there for a while. Why they molt in the winter is beyond me, but it must have to do with their age and egg cycles or something. Still have not called Cari Guidry to see if she is ready for some hens. Not sure she will get the green egg layers. They are fun even though they are not especially friendly. The Barred Rocks like to be petted. But Harriet and Edith would just prefer to be left alone, thank you very much. Have not seen a white egg this week either. Athena is really off the laying kick. Maybe when it gets warmer she will start laying again. She is the only hen out there that lays white eggs.

Connie is still at DFW and will not get into Washington until nearly 12 tonight. Just hope all goes well for her flight. Her friend from Blue Cross took her to the airport here. She did not want me to take her because she thinks I have Covid. Don't know what is wrong with me, but don't really feel like it is the flu. Just not up to par and hurting. No fever--have checked. About as energetic as last summer's grasshopper--in winter. Oh well. This too shall pass.

SO glad those chickens are out there needing my attention. It would be so easy to just lie around doing nothing. But the dogs and the hens are always around and need taking care of on a regular basis. Last night we actually got to sleep all night--no weird sounds or people carrying on. Maybe the lights made a difference. Whatever. Woke up at 3 when the paper person drove by and promptly went right back to sleep. And the dogs were happy to sleep all night as well.

The atmosphere between here and the hospital and between my hill and the lake is almost thick with fog. Can't see the shoreline on the lake at least. Thought earlier that my living room windows were just fogged up, but it was outside instead of the humidity in here. Saw that my neighbor took his big boat out to go fishing. Can't imagine fishing right now, but then, it takes all kinds in different kinds of weather.

Thompson just made a "nest" out of his extra blanket. Not really sure what that was all about, but he does stuff like that every so often. Even if he is covered up, he gets up and balls that blanket up under him. Whatever. He and Sylvia have not been play fighting today for some reason. Maybe it's the weather. They don't like to run outside in the rain much. Cold doesn't seem to be a problem as much as this wet stuff. It always makes me think of Granddad's cattle playing when they get out there and run around and chase each other. Good memories.

The dogs just announced "strangers in the hood" for me. Not much gets past them. Any vehicle is suspect in their minds--even Donny and his truck. Oh well. They are doing their job.

Will talk to you next time about mindfulness. Mindful prayer is the kind where we think about what we need to talk about, and do it with more or less of a plan. It may or may not be instigated by Bible study or by inspirational readings. But mindfulness is also necessary to help us plan our own living response to what goes on around us. God gives us His spirit. We don't have to always have certain words to use in order to speak with Him because He hears His spirit within us. But maybe we can talk about that next time. Kinda tired tonight.

May you all rest well and awake with joy. You are loved.

Friends Who Need Prayers.

We ALL have friends who need prayers right now--most of us need those prayers ALL the time, as well. But for some reason things happen to some folks to the point that we just want to get up and go get them and hug them or something along those lines. My friend Connie is looking online right now to get a plane to go get her sister. Rebekah has issues that are physical, emotional, and mental, but she does pretty well as long as she is with Connie. For the five months she was here in WF with her sister, she was pretty healthy and fairly happy. Now she is in Maryland with her husband who is a complete and disgusting result of a macro marginal digestive mess. Yeah, he is really full of it. Rebekah has been trying to get things ready for their move to Denver, but it is making her sick to work in that house. Connie suspects that it has mold in it. Whatever it is, Rebekah needs away from the house and from her husband. Would appreciate all prayers for both Connie, Rebekah, and the safe travels they will need to make.

So this old woman went out and picked up fifteen eggs today. The hens are really doing a good job. Will have to ask Kissi if she needs any eggs this next week. Might have to call Cari Guidry and see if she needs any, too. Wish it were not so difficult to get them to the kids, but Lance thinks we would end up hugging--a no no right now. Honestly have not felt good in a bit now, so it would definitely be better not to be around anyone. Took my temperature, but it was 95.5. Oh well.

Had groceries delivered so that I would not have to go out and drive anywhere. It may cost more that way, but being still just feels better right now. They did not have everything on my list, but what the hey! Whatever is missing is not a big deal. And then there is Amazon. Airborne with elderberry will have to come in the mail.

Found out that one of my friends from MSU has moved to OKC. Her son is still a nurse here who travels from place to place. Can't imagine that is very reassuring to either her or her son. Hope he is well paid! In her position at MSU she demanded that all of her students have an editor for their file papers or any other major works turned in to the department. It made sense to let an editor work over the papers before the professors had to deal with them. It was an interesting job to edit those papers, but some of the students should never have left high school English classes, much less college classes. Lance says it amazes him that colleges do not require good, sound thinking, much less good grammar or spelling! Sitting here shaking my head.

It was misting rain a few minutes ago. It has been foggy looking all day long. The forecast is for 70% chance of showers tomorrow and then cooler weather on Wednesday. Figures. We can use the rain, of course, but just wish the weather did not have to get down to freezing. Daddy used to say that a good freeze would kill the bugs. Not sure which bugs he meant, but never noticed any dearth of pill bugs or mosquitoes. The pill bugs don't hurt anything, but the mosquitoes are a pain--literally. Oh well. Such is life and weather in Texas.

Finished off the roast beef and some squash that was in the freezer. The dogs ate the last four bites. All divisions have to be equal around here. The paper plate is worth a good growl, too. Livestock and pets!

Hoping that sleep is easier tonight. The dingbat neighbors over on Lake View were making noise around 11 and got Thompson stirred up. Let him out the kitchen door, and something or someone hit the fence shortly thereafter. He was one ticked off puppy. And then the kid and his dad started laughing and carrying on as if they had done something. Thompson came back in, finally, and then someone made more noise at 3 a.m. Joy to the world! Got back to sleep and woke up at 5. Yep, a full night's sleep would be nice. Will leave some lights on tonight and see if that helps. Had to let Patty Anderson know that the lights were going to be on tonight so she would not worry. She does the same thing when Donny is going to be away for the night. Lots of light so she can get a good clear shot of their happy behinds--shooting is her other skill.

Dread for Connie to be leaving and will be happy when she gets back. She has to find a cat sitter for her two cats. No way could they come stay with me. My dogs kill cats, bats, rats, and elephants. The chickens are safe--basically--but nothing else. Hope whoever takes care of the cats will give them some kitty loving.

Connie said her little neighbor who had invited her over for a bowl of soup before Connie knew she had Covid actually came down with a light case. She recovered, and her family is moving her to Royal Estates where they prepare the meals. A friend of mine used to live there because he did not want to rent an apartment or cook. He liked it. But then, he is very outgoing and would talk a person's legs off given the chance. To each his own.

It is raining now instead of just misting. Too early for the girls to roost for the night, but they don't mind a bit of rain as long as it is not freezing. But they definitely do not care for snow! Don't blame them.

Got some candied ginger to use when my stomach doesn't like me. Wish it were clear to me what causes the problems so that whatever it is could just be avoided. Some things work better than others, but so far pickles and ginger seem to work best. Go figure.

Was reading some stuff that Dutch Henry posted online about Bible study and prayer. It made me remember something that occurred to me some time back: it never feels as if my prayers are ever "over." They just resume at different times and on different topics. It does seem that gratitude is a big part of my prayer life--thanking God for life and all the many blessings. Standing on the deck looking at the world start a new day always makes me remember how blessed we are both individually and as a people or family. SO much could happen that never does. We are often protected when we have no idea that the protection is even needed. Have seen much of that in my own life. Thinking about the time that a caterpillar frame was dropped on Lewis' hand. It should have been crushed. It had a cut that had to be stitched up, but other than bruising, it was just fine. That had to be his guardian angel protecting him. And the fall from the horse when she fell on me in the snowy field away from the house. She got up. We rode away. Never take life for granted. Never take God's plan for granted. Just my thoughts.

May you all rest well and awake with joy. You are loved.

Drowsy Sleep Patterns.

So not sleeping last night has messed my sleep patterns up a bit. Have felt super drowsy all day. But maybe tomorrow that will change. Just need to get outside and get some exercise or something. It really was not a bad day--at least not cold--but misty earlier and not sunny at all. Did not get diddly squat done either inside or out, so no excuses because of the weather. Just bleah.

Saw a post by Ann Hunt that her shingles were affecting the sciatic nerve so that she is in intense pain from her hip to her foot. Lord! That has to be miserable. If my mind has not left me completely, Ann (Sullivan) was our last baby sitter before Mom gave up trying to work away from home. She was the sweetest person alive! Probably still is. Anyway, please remember her in your prayers. While this Covid crud is absolutely killing people, the other stuff is making life miserable, too. Jane Scott has had repeated treatments of all sorts for cancer, and it just keeps coming back or at least not going away. She has such a wonderful attitude that it just seems like it is not fair for her to be put through this kind of garbage. Shaking my head here.

Not sure what activity or lack thereof has caused my own brand of soreness, but Jennifer reminded me today to do the Dead Sea Salt bath in very hot water. It seemed to make me feel better for a bit. At least my allergies are not as bad. None of us is immune from the changes in weather and the barometer effects. Michelle Malay said her favorite knee is talking to her now. And then one of the dogs ran into her knee and made it go backwards! Dang! That smarts!

Collected ten eggs today, but may find a few more this evening. Or not. They lay better when they get sunshine and green grass. Looking forward to green anything right now! Don't even think mowing will bother me that much.

Did not get out to put any seed in the flower beds. Maybe tomorrow. Have some beet seeds that could go into the ground right now. But they still need to be covered--can't just throw them at the ground! Although, have planted wild flower seeds about like that a few times. And the seeds germinated and made flowers! Have poppy seeds of various types that need to be planted. They do well if planted in the winter for some reason. Oh, for the spring rains and flowers!

Made roast beef with brown gravy and some fake potatoes today for breakfast. Yes, that should be a lunch or supper, but had that on my feeble mind, so there! Plan to restock the freezer with frozen veggies and frozen meals that will last a while. Have canned food, but the meals are SO easy. Today's dinn-upper was a small can of peaches with cottage cheese. Earlier, the dogs shared a piece of smoked gouda with me. Lance made it, and it is great! Just have three little pieces left now. They are beginning to dry out a bit, so the dogs get the outside peel while yours truly eats the soft stuff.

Thinking of my friend who once came to pick me up to go do a Meals on Wheels run. Looked down in the little console area to find an orange all peeled and ready to eat. That is the kind of friends God gives us when we need them. NOT that the orange was so needed, but the thought behind it meant so much to me. That lady helped me get past those first few weeks after Lewis died. Can't ever have better friends than that.

Talked to Lance today and offered to run down to Bowie to take some eggs there and meet up with one of the kids. He finally answered and said that we shouldn't as the need for hugs would overcome common sense. He's right, of course. Could just squeeze the wee out of each one of my kids right now! Miss them so much. Guess this not being able to visit makes it worse than just normal. Not sure anything will ever be "normal" again. Dadgumit!

When trying to find something to watch on the Fire Stick thingy, each time it said something about not being able to access that channel. Guess a phone call to Jenn will tell me what the old woman is doing wrong. Still have BritBox on my laptop for a couple of months, but not going to renew it. Normally the FireStick does the trick. It's just me, no doubt. Oh well. Have plenty of books to read!

Someone said we need to keep the gasoline filled up before the price goes up. Guess tomorrow the gas cans will get filled before summer hits. If the hens can't keep the grass down, might have to get an alpaca--joking. Not sure they eat grass or something else. Oh well.

We are so blessed to have what we need and more. Let's do our part to make our own part of the world as good as our abilities and inclination can make it. God gives us great blessings, so we have greater responsibilities. To each his own talent.

Rest well and stay safe, my friends. You are loved.

Reward Points!

Don't you just LOVE reward points that make a purchase cost less or even nothing! Today Sutherlands "gave" me two 12 ft. dowel rods to use in my hen houses [plus two cases of water]. It just tickles me pink to get to do things like that. Great big smile on my face. Once, when we were remodeling the house and had to buy washer, dryer, fridge, and cook stove all at the same time, we had enough points that Sutherlands charged us $7 for a trailer to pull behind the lawn tractor! Lewis was the one tickled pea green over that one. Anyway, have laughed to myself about folks getting fuel at Market Street for $1 a gallon, but it is the same principle.

Even without sunshine, it has been a pretty nice day. Saw Donny Anderson out and talked to him over the fence. My silly dog--Sylvia--growled at him because he was near me. She is kinda over protective. But the dogs played while the hens sat out by the swing with me. Two of my hens like to swing, well, like attention. They like to be fed from my hand and were looking pretty closely at my fingers. Always have to have that one hen who will peck my fingernails! Not that it hurts, but still. Got the spade fork out and turned over a couple of forks of dirt for them. Plenty of worms out there. Well, fewer now.

The online weather report said that February was going to be warmer--but dryer. Figures. May have to get my seeds in the ground now before the next rain. Maybe tomorrow. Can't wait to see some of these things come up and actually grow up enough to bloom. Love to see the yard blooming.

Removed a bunch of books from my Kindle today. They get cluttered up even if they don't collect dust. They do, at least, say "read" on them if they are finished, but still, it is much nicer to have the fresh ones that have never been opened right on the ready line.

Have eaten frozen meals today instead of cooking. And have food cooked in the fridge to eat. Just don't want to prepare anything for myself. Lazy ol' woman. Maybe tomorrow. Have to think about what would be good to go with cooked roast. Thinking is the hard part.

Have decided that ALL clothes--with the possible exception of bras, panties, and socks--should have pockets. Have a pair of sweats on right now that have NO pockets! Stupid. Just inordinately inappropriate for clothing styles. Everyone needs a pocket on shirts and pants! We carry knives, phones, hankies, and assorted shtuff that needs to go in a pocket! Think maybe sewing pockets on my sweats might be a project. Don't really care if it is beautiful as long as it works for what is needed to be carried! It might be fun to make chicken pockets on my sweat top and a holster on my sweat pants. Hmm. See, thinking about putting on pockets is much more productive than thinking about cooking. Just goes to show what is more important.

Will see what my girls think about their new roosting arrangement tonight. Chickens are really not too fond of changes, but that is how things have always been around this place. Lewis told one of the men at work one time that if he worked the "can 'til can't" shift at work that he had to turn the lights on when he came home so he would not fall over the furniture. Back then it was not uncommon for me to move everything once a week when cleaning. Not quite that way any more, but close.

Don't know anything much worth talking about. Still read Tara Ross posts and comments on my blog. But everything else is pretty much lightly perused. Not getting into politics if possible. Just too distressing. My nephew Danny Pollard posted a piece about being as respectful of the new president as everyone was of President Trump. Kinda funny when it is considered. And they STILL want to be tacky. Anything said now is beyond unnecessary either way. This is where 100% of the nation thinks that 50% of the folks have lost their minds. So it will be.

May you all stay well and find peace in your lives. We are all so very blessed by God. You are loved.

Screen Savers.

So watching BritBox on the fire thingy that Jenn brought and set up and had to run out to check on the hens. Now there are some very lovely pictures as the screen savers on the TV. Wish they would label the places they show. Recognized Manchu Pichu, but the rest are mostly guesses. The ones in America--the San Francisco bridge--are easy enough to recognize. Others might be in Spain or somewhere in Europe. Ah well. Texas has many lovely sights. Thinking of a hill that overlooks a very large valley as one leaves St. Jo and heads north. It really took my breath away upon the first sight. But then, the Hill Country is like that somewhat as well.

Jennifer said that a trip back from the area north of San Antonio was like a deer run! That is what always happens when this time of the year comes. Think it must be time for the bucks to look for doe(s) or something. The deer are even active right here in WF wherever we have mesquites in the pastures. Doesn't take much cover. Same goes for the bobcats, coyotes, and skunks, however.

The series on the TV right now is called Silent Witness or something like that. The main character is a pathologist. Yes, it always has to do with death in that case. It's not like some funny show is going to come up to make life cheerful. Tried two different things that said they were funny. Nope. Stupid, but not funny. Will look some more in a bit. Just have to wait until after time to close the hens up.

Finished off the vegetable beef soup a few minutes ago. Pretty good soup even if it was made right here on Dickerson Hill. Made bacon, hash browns, and scrambled eggs this morning, but nothing really tasted good, so the dogs will finish that off later. Bleah. The eggs were not bad, but just did not suit me or something.

It is misting rain again. It has off and on all day. It's one of those days when a person can't really do diddly squat outside anyway. The hens still go out and root around for edibles, but the yard simply has no green grass right now. Probably need to buy a squash or two for them. Pretty funny thought: buying squash or something for chickens!

Got out the light box today so the grey days would not be as bad for me. Connie was telling me that she has to have prescription strength vitamin D because she is allergic to sunlight. Her skin is milk white, so she would burn in the sun anyway. Remembered that my Grandmother Kennedy had very fair skin and always wore a floppy hat and long sleeves. She burned easily, too. Maybe it is genetic?

Lance sent me a bag of stuff that had a soft, fluffy blanket inside. Had it wrapped around me this morning and lay down for a few minutes. Think it may have been more than a few because sleep was involved. Who knew that a soft blanket would induce sleep.

Think staying off of FB may have to be almost permanent except for just posting in Common Sense. Everything on the JP and AOL has not been very happy. So, please excuse me if a birthday is missed or something. If you need to talk to me, call me or send a private message on FB. Those are usually read.

Need to lie down to get to my toenails and clip the suckers. Can remember chewing my toenails as a kid. That just makes me laugh now thinking about it. Nowadays it is too difficult to bend over or put one leg across a knee to get to the nails at the right angle. Know that is why Charlie Anderson got a pedicure every so often. sigh

Don't want to sound like a gripey ol' woman tonight, so maybe this would be a good time to tell you that we share our thoughts and our prayers because we have the right attitude--most of the time. God has blessed us. And you are loved.

Itsy Bitsy Egg.

One of the Barred Rock pullets began laying today. It was an itsy bitsy egg--about the size of a quail egg. Won't put it in an egg carton for anyone. Someone might think we had been out there raiding the sparrow nests!

Am ready for some sunshine! It may rain tomorrow, but the sunshine is not scheduled to return until NEXT Tuesday. sigh. Have a light that will be set up on my desk the rest of the week to just be sure that my mind is on sunshine whether or not we actually have any. Light boxes are supposed to help anyone who needs extra sunlight during this time of the year. Don't know how people in overcast and grey countries survive!

The fifty stakes came today in the mail, but putting them out in the fence line probably won't happen until the weather is a bit better. Meanwhile will just have to keep an eye on my girls and let the dogs do their work around the place.

Found a stupid shirt in the driveway today. Haven't figured that one out unless it blew out of the trash truck that came today. Guess that is possible. Will probably just hang it on the fence next to the neighbor's place where the little boy lives. His name is Caleb. This is a size seven, so it may be too small for him--which may be why it could have been in the trash. But it is in really good shape. Strange, just strange.--Just handed it over the fence to Caleb, but did not bother to ask him why it was in my driveway. Hmm.

Maggie Sewell came and got eggs today. Did not go out to visit with her but just handed her some eggs and went back to the house. She suggested getting tested, but I don't feel like going anywhere anyway. Those stupid tests are not necessarily accurate anyway. Although, the one Connie's friend took was positive, and Connie got the stupid virus from her. But her friend barely had any symptoms at all. Not Connie. She was one sick puppy. At least she is much better now.

Made vegetable soup today. It had roast, carrots, peppers, beans, broccoli, and other stuff in it along with chunks of roast beef. Could have put some beef bouillon in it, but just didn't. Did not really want anything very salty. Just trying to get plenty of fluids right now.

My granddaughter called me today to talk while she was doing the last mile of her three-mile run. She walked the last mile to talk to me. Normally her friend goes with her, but today she was by herself. I would not let her go until she was in her car and had the engine on. Her mom had her on location, but it still makes me nervous when she is by herself. Thinking her brother could have used some exercise!

Pretty tired tonight even though have not done doodly poo. Woke up before 5 this morning and could not go back to sleep. That is just nuts! May just take a sleeping pill tonight and see if that helps. Have heard folks who get older sometimes have problems sleeping, but always thought that was because they tend to fall asleep sitting around. Haven't started doing that yet--notice the word YET. argh

Have a book started--well, about half way through--called Polar Vortex. How appropriate! Although this book talks about a plane crash onto an ice field, it still makes me glad that Texas does not usually have anything like 60 to 100 degrees below zero! Can't imagine.

Closed the doors on the coops and noticed that the neighbors are trying to entertain the entire neighborhood with loud music. rolling eyes here Oh well.

Listened to President Trump's farewell message. Love the fact that he pointed out that he was not a politician--neither Democrat nor Republican, but American! He was what we needed to put folks back to work. Oh, plenty of people do not think he did anything right, but this ol' gal is not one of them. Be that as it may, my prayer for him and his family will be for their safety and success in whatever they choose to do in the future. Simply can't imagine how our nation would be right now had he not been elected.

The dogs are looking out the windows trying to see what is out there. More barks. Nothing like it to keep things interesting. They have been really happy with their tennis balls and a firehose toy. They keep trying to sneak the firehose outside. But they know what "put it down" means. No taking it outside! Funny critters. Wondering if BillyeRuth's new dog has its favorite toys yet. She is blessed to get a new dog that will mind her. But then, the dog is blessed to get BR!

Think I hear my Kindle calling me. You all rest well, stay warm, and keep calm. God gives us His grace as a gift. So be thankful while you are at it. You are loved.

How Great Thou Art.

Cleaning the bathroom floor this morning and moving some things in the rack where the towels and other things are stored, and a CD showed its toes to me. It was one that Lewis had made for me. Don't ask me why it was in that container in the bathroom of all places! But it was an Alan Jackson CD that reminded me of standing next to Mom in the First Baptist Church in Petrolia. Mom's voice was not the most melodious, but it was easy to hear and listen to back then. Jennifer reminded me that Mom's laughter could be heard all the way down the street when she came up to visit. Yep, it embarrassed Dad, but it always made me smile. She had a good sense of humor when we were young. Anyway, enjoyed listening to the old hymns on my computer. Thought the CD player was messed up, but it just had a bit of sweetened coffee spilled down there. It still works.

Today Sylvia made me think that she might not have quite enough toys to play with. ahem. She was chewing on something quite vigorously--think ROCK! But it turned out to be an old bone she found. All the toys in the world are not nearly as good as a bone one finds in the back yard, ya see. Lance sent a box by FedUp and it had dog toys in it--three tennis balls that had never been chewed on in a container that had a pop to it when it was opened. And a fire hose toy that had a squeaker in one of the legs--the squeaker came out in nothing flat, of course. Anyway, the dogs thoroughly enjoyed their surprises. The rest of the stuff in the package was a happy surprise for me. Seems Landon and Rachel went "shopping" for goodies--some candy boxes, some neat fluffly, plush socks, and a red checked plush blanket to cuddle in. Fun surprises!

Sat outside on the yard swing and talked to some hens today. One of the black-laced Wyandottes usually wants some loving, but the dogs wanted me to throw tennis balls. Oh well. Petted the hen later in the yard when the two dogs were zooming around back and forth through the side gate. Crazy critters. Wish that much energy were available to me just for the fun of it. As it is, the three coops needed to be cleaned out and the CS applied in various places--holes dug by the hens. If you think that dogs can dig holes, just keep hens around! May have to start applying bricks to some of their handy work! Ah, but the coops are much neater now with all the shtuff raked out and hauled to the holes. Still want to go get several dowel rods that are big around enough to hold hens--think bigger than broom sticks. Have a couple in two of the coops, but would like to get enough to enable me to remove the the boards up there in the top of the coop. Just have to wait until my energy level is a bit higher.

My daughter-by-another mother, Laurie, lost her real dad recently. Not sure what caused his death, but it is just hard no matter what. Does not seem like it has been all that long ago that her mom died. Some "old folks" just don't really feel old until we look around and see those our own age leaving their children behind. Yep, life goes on and things change. Thinking about how the trees drop their leaves and make things ready for each new year. Wish it were easier to think of our changes that way.

My shower tonight made me feel SO much better after getting in all that dust in the hen house. Nothing like hot water, shampoo, and then a clean nightie to make a person feel comfortable. And the smell is pretty good with some special love stuff from Michelle. She is always finding some kind of good smelling stuff. At least this does not have that overwhelming perfume in it that so much stuff has. Just gentle smells that remind me of spring time and petunias.

Don't really know much tonight. As usual. Thought that maybe Maggie would come by for some eggs today. Will just hand out eggs rather than really visit anyone. Have to stay away from everyone for a while because my own body might just have something to make others ill. Have not felt the best in the west and Jenn reminded me that some folks can have this virus and never know it. Not good. Just not taking any chances with anyone else either way. Be so doggone glad when everyone is over this mess. Don't know if that will happen this year or in a few years, but eventually, huh.

May you all have peace of mind and stay healthy. You are loved.

Another Book.

Just finished reading another book by Hillary Avis--about a woman who loves her hens and her family. These are called Cozy Mysteries, but to me they are more like community stories. They remind me so much of what Petrolia used to be like back in the day. Everyone knew too much about each neighbor and their dog and cat. And back then we did not exactly have the wealth that comes from many small businesses. In fact, no one actually had a job much IN Petrolia. Most folks had to go to Wichita Falls to get a job. Some folks owned businesses--a grocery store, a variety store, a laundry, an insurance agency, a cafĂ©, a drugstore--can't really remember any others. Of course, we had one Baptist church, a Methodist Church, and a Church of God. My parents were Baptists and Grandmother was Methodist, so sometimes my Grandmother got to take me with her. Learned all the songs but never knew them to be all that different. But to a child, nothing is all that strange in life unless someone points it out. Vacation Bible School just got doubled. God seemed to be everywhere we were.

Walked the fences again today to be sure that the neighbors' puppies could not get under the fence line. Found a couple of places that were not tight. SO, Amazon will be delivering some things that look a bit like tent stakes so the fence can be pulled tighter. Hoping that makes a difference. When first putting this fence up, bought some stuff called "dig defence" that was very expensive. It works, but it is hard to put in the ground and has to be cut into sections. That part is not going to happen since there is not a bolt cutter out in the workshop. Can't imagine needing a bolt cutter for any other purpose either. Let's just hope these new stakes work well.

Sat out back in the lawn swing and fed the hens from my hands. Isa likes to get in my lap, but the other hens are pretty rambunctious when they know it is all about feed. She won't get near them because she is not high enough on the pecking order. Sad. The ones that are so pretty are still timid. And the ones like Isa know they are not dominant enough to get by with much. A little like life, maybe.

Tara Ross posted today or yesterday about how important news sources are in any society. They certainly have made a difference in the past several years. Sadly, they are not sources that we can trust completely. Years ago when college classes included technical writing and some basic journalism, one of the things pointed out was the use of slanted language.  Back then it was considered somewhat dangerous to use slanted language because it was obvious that it was a weapon in the hands of those who did not care for giving a true picture of any particular situation. That was one of the reasons that journalist were supposed to use words like "presumed" or other words that did not definitely find someone guilty in the press before a person could be tried by a jury. Don't think that sort of language is even considered today. We get the "mind reading" of journalism that indicates that knowledge is certain no matter what intention is or is not possible for those who are accused. Isn't it amazing how so many people can read minds!

Got locks on two gates and suggestions from Jennifer about doors on the workshop. Will have to see if Cindy Jones can get Stephen's phone number to me. Then will talk to Barry Ice about lights and cameras. sigh It's ridiculous, but this is how life is in this current world. Guess someone is always going to be a bit shady or underhanded. Just has never been that much of a problem before.

Tonight the big tub is going to get filled with hot water, Epsom salts, and smell-um goody. Going to see if the sore muscles are just needing a good limbering up or what. Haven't done anything this week to warrant sore muscles, so maybe it is just bad attitude! Getting ornerier by the day just does not mean we have to be sorer by the day! And then, too, the weather will change, and we will all have those little twinges that say, "Oh, did you need a knee to tell the barometric pressure?"

Guess the eggs should be gathered up and brought inside for the day. Try to go out at least twice a day, but if the pullets are on the nests, just walk away and leave them alone. They are not accustomed to sitting still for me yet. In time. Love my girls, but they are definitely particular about things. Well, that goes for ALL of us.

May you all enjoy a good night's rest and awake with a sense of purpose. You are loved.

Chicken Hobbies.

Thinking today about hobbies and wondering if some had ever been in my life that just were special. Yeah, well, the donkey, the two horses, learning French--just enough to read and write it but never to speak or hear it--some embroidery and sewing (mostly curtains and kids' clothes), but nothing like my chickens. They are my hobby! My dogs are my housemates, friends, and kinda family. But those hens! They are characters and so much fun. Yep, little things like giving them treats makes my day when they come up to me and want to be petted. Or they will chase me around the yard if a spade fork is involved. WORMS@ under each forkful! Yep, if they ever got out of the yard, just would have to get the spade fork out to get them back inside the yard.

Reading a book currently about a woman who decided to move back to the town where she grew up. She has an apple orchard and raises hens. She calls her farm the Lucky Clucker Farm. And one of her first chickens--not a chick--was a rooster that someone dropped off at her house. She named him Alarm Clock. BillyeRuth said that her roosters never gave up crowing just because it was dark. But she had two competing roos. Silly critters. Definitely do not want any roos here. My girls are very happy.

The type of hens this lady has are called Welsummers. They are absolutely beautiful. They were originally mixed breeds that became a set breed standard finally with what looks like a black jacket in the wings. But the hens have speckles. Let's face it, some of us just like things that have feathers and cluck.

Picked up some oyster shell and some feather fluffer (goodies) for my girls today. The sack says to give them a tablespoon or so with their feed. So a tablespoon in this feeder, a little on the box near the feeder, another tablespoon in the Other feeder....Apparently they like the stuff. It looks as if it might have marigold leaves in it. Smells funny, too.

Talked to my daughter-in-law today. She liked the mask with the books and the cat in the shelves even though Lance thought it was sent to HIM. His is Calvin and Hobbs and will be there sooner or later. That cartoon just suits him--sarcasm and all. She told me that she had to float her husband a loan today because he wanted to send off for something and had not received his pay check. Seems all the upper management at work was out in quarantine! Hmm. Doesn't take much to mess things up if you were actually waiting on a paycheck. Don't think it was a problem for them, but hey! It sounded funny to "float a loan" to her husband. She gets to tease him.

Going to have to get a sling shot to keep the neighbors' dogs out of my front yard. It makes Sylvia and Thompson go bananas when those dogs get out front and won't go away. So far my shouting at them has worked fairly well, but they only go so far. sigh

Got kinda tickled at neighbor Patty. Donny is out on a lease hunting and told her he was not sleeping well. She wanted him to come home so his dog Roxie would sleep better. SHE would also sleep better. So today when she called me, she was not too happy to hear that someone has been leaving my side gate open. She called Donny and told him that a different piece of chain needed to be put in my gate so it could be locked. He's coming home tonight! Think SHE wanted him to come home and this gives him a good excuse. Wouldn't want his cousin to think that he loves his wife and has to be home for HER! Funny. Anyway, he will probably be here tonight to put a piece of chain on my gate using my Cat lock. Eventually will put one on two more gates. Not sure why anyone would want in my yard, but since a tool was lying out there on the ground since my last walk about, someone has been getting under the gate and getting into the workshop. Will have to do something about that. Guess it will take either taller gates or let the dogs out more at night. Hate having to think about having new doors made for the workshop, but that might be the only answer. Usually check the fence line at least once a week, but twice now have had a hen out for no reason--except the gate was open. Not good. Could not stand it if those dogs got into my flock.

Ate the last of the spaghetti squash and lamb today. Dang that was good! Had some avocado with it, too. Tasty! Going to be eating avocado with just about everything for a few days. Tomorrow morning it will be scrambled eggs and avocado! Maybe boiled eggs and avocado for lunch-upper. No sense in letting anything go to waste.

Got a sweet call from Michelle and Joe Malay today. Those two are something special. Lance told me last fall that this was going to be the Christmas of the knives. Everyone on his list got a knife--yes, including me. Nice sharp knife. Small enough to put in my purse if the old woman is careful how she puts her hand inside. Not Joe! His knife is large enough it has to be strapped to the purse--and sharp enough to need two bandaids each time it is unsheathed! Love how men think! But then, Michelle and the old woman like those men pretty well. They ARE kinda special.

Brought all the water bowls inside today to scrub both inside and outside of the bowls and holders. They look nice and clean--which might last a day if the girls are not too messy. The big black dog bowls are their favorites anyway, but they have to be changed each day, too. WHY the dogs think they have to stand in the bowls to drink is beyond me! Oh well.

Looks like the weather may be decent for a few days. If we get by without another gale force wind, it will suit me. Going outside when the wind is blowing so hard and the temperature is low makes a body hurt all the way to the bone. Guess it could be worse. At least it is not freezing with ice out there.

Don't really know anything tonight worth much. Still pretty much staying off of FB or other sources. Not totally, but close enough. Not interested in anybody's "news" source. No garbage needed around here. Got enough CS to fertilize the field as it is. If it seems as if your posts are not being noticed, just remember that some of us are trying to maintain sanity.

May you each sleep well this night, stay safe, and remember: you are loved.

Paper Hats.

Daddy used to have this saying: the wind blew; the shtuff flew; and we all had on paper hats. Let me tell ya, the wind has definitely blown today! Thought it was pretty rough yesterday, but today the hens have been sticking pretty close to the coop. Pretty sure they are trying to only lay those eggs once!

Used to listen to Skip McBride tell us about the weather and always wished to have one of those air speed things to mount on top of the house or somewhere. According to my phone, the wind speed was only 27 mph at four this afternoon. On top of this hill over the lake, it feels like a lot faster and much colder than the weather ever says. But still, we are Texans and learn to lean into it; and if our hats fly off, well, exercise is chasing down one of those gimme hats from the feed store. Or not.

It's supposed to freeze again tonight. Just have to grit our teeth and deal with it. Turn up the heater; open the cabinet doors; let the water drip. Look at the calendar. See that this month is half over. And don't turn the page 'cause February is next. Oh well.

Dr. Blackwell's nurse came to get eggs this afternoon. You know, those hens are doing a pretty good job of producing eggs. Sent four dozen home with Kissy the other day and three dozen home with Jennifer today. Yep, good hens!

Other than stripping the dog blankets off the couch and washing them, nothing special has been accomplished around here. But the couch looks neater with just two blankets instead of three or four. Going to have to take a needle and thread to the dog pillow to mend a spot on the side. How that dog does it is beyond me, but Sylvia has to paw things before she will lie down on anything. Crazy critter. At least the floor is mopped up a bit with all the rubber parts to her tennis balls swept up and thrown out. Now we only have sharks with wimpy tails lying around on the couch with the two dogs. And they have not even done any play fighting today. Think the wind upsets Sylvia. Noises do that to her. She curls up and snuggles down in a corner of the couch. Wish all three of us could do that, but only when the sun is shining straight through the windows and making it feel good. Pretty soon we will be pulling curtains to AVOID the sunlight in July and August! Ah well.

Have been getting more and more robo calls on my cellphone. Someone told me quite some time back that those could be prevented, but don't remember how or if it really worked. Oh well. They show up in red if the phone believes them to be spam, so they don't get answered. Now, if my BODY had a warranty, it might be interesting to get some work done! Sitting here thinking about Tami Yonts and her husband today. He is supposed to get a new knee today. Hope all went well for him. As big a deal as they have been making out of the "no beds available" business at the hospitals, it is surprising that he was able to go in for surgery. Noticed that a woman over in Scotland who got a liver transplant some years ago, is having to go for dialysis for her kidneys now. And the hospital couldn't take her because of the stupid virus. Things are just pretty messed up right now.

Glanced out the window to the north and thought the glass was dirty. Nope. Dust in the air. Figures. Maybe a good dust storm would kill the virus out there. Hmm.

As usual nothing exciting is happening around here--which is really just fine with me. Saw that Donny Anderson and cousin were off to the wilds again this weekend with their little buggy things that take them into the brush and out again. That motorized buggy is in case they get more deer or pigs than they can carry. One would about do it. As long as the snakes stay denned up somewhere else, it sounds like a nice cold weekend. Not my bag of tea, but know plenty of folks who like to do that stuff. See pictures that Diann Dennis takes of the rivers in Arkansas near where she lives. THAT would be my cup of coffee! But it is about two blankets too cool up that way for me. Ah, to be a tough ol' cookie.

Well, God will take care of us one way or the other. We can just watch and wait on His time. May you all rest well and stay healthy. You are loved.
