Chicken Hobbies.

Thinking today about hobbies and wondering if some had ever been in my life that just were special. Yeah, well, the donkey, the two horses, learning French--just enough to read and write it but never to speak or hear it--some embroidery and sewing (mostly curtains and kids' clothes), but nothing like my chickens. They are my hobby! My dogs are my housemates, friends, and kinda family. But those hens! They are characters and so much fun. Yep, little things like giving them treats makes my day when they come up to me and want to be petted. Or they will chase me around the yard if a spade fork is involved. WORMS@ under each forkful! Yep, if they ever got out of the yard, just would have to get the spade fork out to get them back inside the yard.

Reading a book currently about a woman who decided to move back to the town where she grew up. She has an apple orchard and raises hens. She calls her farm the Lucky Clucker Farm. And one of her first chickens--not a chick--was a rooster that someone dropped off at her house. She named him Alarm Clock. BillyeRuth said that her roosters never gave up crowing just because it was dark. But she had two competing roos. Silly critters. Definitely do not want any roos here. My girls are very happy.

The type of hens this lady has are called Welsummers. They are absolutely beautiful. They were originally mixed breeds that became a set breed standard finally with what looks like a black jacket in the wings. But the hens have speckles. Let's face it, some of us just like things that have feathers and cluck.

Picked up some oyster shell and some feather fluffer (goodies) for my girls today. The sack says to give them a tablespoon or so with their feed. So a tablespoon in this feeder, a little on the box near the feeder, another tablespoon in the Other feeder....Apparently they like the stuff. It looks as if it might have marigold leaves in it. Smells funny, too.

Talked to my daughter-in-law today. She liked the mask with the books and the cat in the shelves even though Lance thought it was sent to HIM. His is Calvin and Hobbs and will be there sooner or later. That cartoon just suits him--sarcasm and all. She told me that she had to float her husband a loan today because he wanted to send off for something and had not received his pay check. Seems all the upper management at work was out in quarantine! Hmm. Doesn't take much to mess things up if you were actually waiting on a paycheck. Don't think it was a problem for them, but hey! It sounded funny to "float a loan" to her husband. She gets to tease him.

Going to have to get a sling shot to keep the neighbors' dogs out of my front yard. It makes Sylvia and Thompson go bananas when those dogs get out front and won't go away. So far my shouting at them has worked fairly well, but they only go so far. sigh

Got kinda tickled at neighbor Patty. Donny is out on a lease hunting and told her he was not sleeping well. She wanted him to come home so his dog Roxie would sleep better. SHE would also sleep better. So today when she called me, she was not too happy to hear that someone has been leaving my side gate open. She called Donny and told him that a different piece of chain needed to be put in my gate so it could be locked. He's coming home tonight! Think SHE wanted him to come home and this gives him a good excuse. Wouldn't want his cousin to think that he loves his wife and has to be home for HER! Funny. Anyway, he will probably be here tonight to put a piece of chain on my gate using my Cat lock. Eventually will put one on two more gates. Not sure why anyone would want in my yard, but since a tool was lying out there on the ground since my last walk about, someone has been getting under the gate and getting into the workshop. Will have to do something about that. Guess it will take either taller gates or let the dogs out more at night. Hate having to think about having new doors made for the workshop, but that might be the only answer. Usually check the fence line at least once a week, but twice now have had a hen out for no reason--except the gate was open. Not good. Could not stand it if those dogs got into my flock.

Ate the last of the spaghetti squash and lamb today. Dang that was good! Had some avocado with it, too. Tasty! Going to be eating avocado with just about everything for a few days. Tomorrow morning it will be scrambled eggs and avocado! Maybe boiled eggs and avocado for lunch-upper. No sense in letting anything go to waste.

Got a sweet call from Michelle and Joe Malay today. Those two are something special. Lance told me last fall that this was going to be the Christmas of the knives. Everyone on his list got a knife--yes, including me. Nice sharp knife. Small enough to put in my purse if the old woman is careful how she puts her hand inside. Not Joe! His knife is large enough it has to be strapped to the purse--and sharp enough to need two bandaids each time it is unsheathed! Love how men think! But then, Michelle and the old woman like those men pretty well. They ARE kinda special.

Brought all the water bowls inside today to scrub both inside and outside of the bowls and holders. They look nice and clean--which might last a day if the girls are not too messy. The big black dog bowls are their favorites anyway, but they have to be changed each day, too. WHY the dogs think they have to stand in the bowls to drink is beyond me! Oh well.

Looks like the weather may be decent for a few days. If we get by without another gale force wind, it will suit me. Going outside when the wind is blowing so hard and the temperature is low makes a body hurt all the way to the bone. Guess it could be worse. At least it is not freezing with ice out there.

Don't really know anything tonight worth much. Still pretty much staying off of FB or other sources. Not totally, but close enough. Not interested in anybody's "news" source. No garbage needed around here. Got enough CS to fertilize the field as it is. If it seems as if your posts are not being noticed, just remember that some of us are trying to maintain sanity.

May you each sleep well this night, stay safe, and remember: you are loved.
